The Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has registered 1000 children in Surprise, El Mirage and surrounding areas. However, Ron Klaphake has confirmed they have capped enrollment here until additional funding is found. Congratulate Ron Klaphake and his team (Jesus Hernandez, Debbie Thompson, Nancy Collins and John Yaeger) in bringing early childhood literacy to this part of the Valley with this extremely popular program.

Big News: The Club DPIL effort has just been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Sun City Rotary Club for our DPIL Efforts. This means more kids can/will receive books this upcoming Rotary Year! With the TOS profits and the Arizona Rattlers Fund Raiser we are looking at a positive year. We are still waiting on the results of our City of Surprise SCOP grant but anticipate great things!

ROTARY CLUB OF SURPRISE & SUN CITY WEST

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
May 2026

Hello, Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

May, 2026 brings a sense of renewal to our club—new ideas, new faces, and new opportunities to serve. I’ve been inspired by the energy you’ve brought to the 2026 Taste of Surprise & Arts Festival on April 25th and our other recent projects, especially those supporting local families and students. The impact is real, and it’s growing.

May is Youth Service Month, a time to focus on the incredible impact we have on the next generation. The Club’s Rotary Scholarship Committee will be reviewing student applications and interviewing the top-notch students. At our Club’s last meeting and this month, we’ll be spotlighting our youth programs, preparing for summer service events, and checking in on
long term initiatives. When we invest in a student’s leadership potential or provide a scholarship, we aren’t just helping an individual; we are fostering a lifelong commitment to the ideal of Service Above Self. I encourage you to take a moment this
month to connect with our local youth participants and hear their stories. Their energy is the best reminder of why we do what we do.

As we enter May, the finish line for this Rotary year is officially in sight. This month is a unique time in the Rotary calendar—it is a period of transition where we celebrate our recent accomplishments while ensuring a smooth hand-off to the incoming leadership team. If you’ve been thinking about
stepping into a new role or joining any of the Club’s committees, now is a great time to jump in.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

With only two months left in this term, our Club has much to be proud of. We have strengthened our local impact, contributed to the global fight against polio, and deepened the bonds of fellowship within our meetings.

As we prepare for the year ahead, I ask each of you to consider:

  • Supporting New Leadership: As the President-elect, Phil Souza, and the new board prepare to take the helm, let’s offer them our full mentorship and support. We also begin preparing for transition.
  • Incoming leaders are already laying the groundwork for the year ahead, and your continued support will ensure a seamless and
successful handoff. Rotary thrives because of engaged members like you who are willing to lead and serve.
  • The Power of Invitation: May is an excellent time to invite a guest to a meeting. There is no better way to finish the year than by welcoming a new member into our Rotary family.
Upcoming Dates to Remember

I encourage all members to stay actively involved as we approach the end of the Rotary year. Let’s ensure our ongoing projects are completed with excellence and take pride in the goals we’ve achieved.

Thank you for your tireless dedication to our club, generosity and for everything you do to make our community a better place. Let’s make this May a month of celebration and renewed purpose. Lastly, let’s not forget to enjoy the fellowship that makes our club special. Take time to connect, share stories, and celebrate the friendships that strengthen our mission

I am proud to serve alongside each of you.

Yours in Rotary Service,
Jim Schlenvogt
President (2025-2026)

A Message from the President Elect

As we prepare for the 2026-2027 Rotary year I am excited about the prospects for District 5495 and for our club. I have just returned from the District conference in Mesa and can report that it was well attended and that I met many of the president-elect and District leadership for the coming year. The conference was enlightening and the Rotarians were enthusiastic and committed as ever to service to our communities and leadership of their clubs. I look forward to building on the successes of the past year and working with all of you in service. Thanks to Jim Schlenvogt and the officers and directors for setting the table for the coming year. Together, we thrive.

April  Happenings

April was a really busy and eventful Month. We really had many many things happening and we extraordinarily busy.

Our Month started with our speaker on April 14 with Nate Reilly from the Arizona Rattlers. He discussed the brief History of the Rattlers but more importantly their commitment to non-profits. Nate announced the upcoming fundraiser for the AZ Rattlers game on June 14 where the club receives $5.00 for every ticket sold that game (Announcement and more importantly the QR code is below).

Glenn and Ron were recognized as PHF + 8 and demonstrated their commitment to The Rotary Foundation. Everyone can contribute and I challenge you, in your philanthropy to consider regular giving to The Rotary Foundation or it causes (e. Polio Plus). If any questions, please see Glenn.

On April 25 was our big Event, the Taste of Surprise and Arts Festival. Our Club really stepped up with over 30 volunteers and spouses/significant others working at the venue and helping with Check in, the 50/50 drawing, the raffle, the silent auction, helping our artists locate themselves and set up, the Car Clubs,  the entertainers, the beverage area and of course the Restaurants. While we would have like more attendance, for a first time since Covid it went pretty well. Here are a few pictures from the event:

There are many more images, and these are all in Club Runner. A Special Thankyou to our Sponsors, the Car Clubs (West Valley Car Club and the Automotive Restoration Club of Sun City West), the Artists and Restaurants for their wonderful support.

It has to be mentioned that the People's Choice Award went to Carrabba's for their excellent food but honestly it was all very, very good.

The Month finished with our meeting on April 28th with our focus on Youth Programs.  First, we recognized Gerry Nossotti for his contribution to The Rotary Foundation as a major donor;

Our speakers for the night were our own Jeri Robertson who oversees as the Jr. Interact Advisor for Jr. Ryla at the Arizona Charter Academy and the current President of the Jr. Interact Club

The Club presented the Check to the Interact Club for their work at the Golf Tournament in December;

We also had Travis Rudd from Glendale Community College talk with us about Rotary at the College, the longtime support for Rotary and how the leadership of the college has supported Rotary (and Rotary supported the college) since the college's inception:

While it didn't occur in April, the District Conference was on May 1and 2nd. Jim Schlenvogt, Phil Souza, Ron Klaphake and Glenn Schmitt attended, and the Club and Club Individuals were recognized for its excellence in membership recruitment and retention, New Rotarian Impact, Assistant Governor Excellence, Club Collaboration and overall excellence.  More details will forthcoming next monht, but Jim has outlined all that we accomplished in his email to y'all .

Coming up is the Changing of the Guard Event, June 9 here at the Colonnade. Starts at 5:00 and Phil would like confirmation by the next meeting of your attendance.

Meals of Hope for 2026 has been scheduled for September 19 at the Ottawa University Faith Arena. More information coming.
