The Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has registered 1000 children in Surprise, El Mirage and surrounding areas. However, Ron Klaphake has confirmed they have capped enrollment here until additional funding is found. Congratulate Ron Klaphake and his team (Jesus Hernandez, Debbie Thompson, Nancy Collins and John Yaeger) in bringing early childhood literacy to this part of the Valley with this extremely popular program.

ROTARY CLUB OF SURPRISE & SUN CITY WEST

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
April 2026

Hello, Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

April is a special time in Rotary—a season when service comes to life in visible and meaningful ways. Across Arizona and beyond, Rotary clubs are rolling up their sleeves to make a difference, and our club is no exception. This is the time of year when our shared commitment to “Service Above Self” is most clearly seen in action.

Here at the Rotary Club of Surprise & Sun City West, we continue to build on that spirit through our local projects, partnerships, and fellowship. Whether supporting community programs, assisting local organizations, or preparing for upcoming events like the 2026 Taste of Surprise & Arts Festival, our members consistently demonstrate the power of collective service.

April also gives us an opportunity to reflect on why we serve. Rotary is more than meetings—it is a network of people committed to improving lives both locally and globally. From the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library project, food drives, and scholarships, to supporting seniors and youth programs, our club plays a vital role in strengthening our community.

Investing in Our Future

April is Maternal and Child Health Month on the Rotary calendar. This is a powerful time to reflect on how we support the foundations of a healthy society. Whether it is through local literacy initiatives, supporting regional clinics, or our continued global push for polio eradication, our investments today—of time, talent, and treasure—are the dividends our community will collect for generations to come.

Looking Ahead: Spring Events

We have a busy schedule as we move toward the summer transition:

The Power of Partnerships: We are continuing to highlight the
economic vitality of the West Valley. Our recent focus on regional
development and the burgeoning technology sectors in Arizona
reminds us that a thriving local economy provides the resources for
the charitable work we do every day.

A Call to Action

As we enjoy the beautiful Arizona spring, I encourage each of you to invite a neighbor or a colleague to one of our upcoming meetings. Growth is the lifeblood of our club, and your personal invitation is the most effective way to share the quote "United for Good" with the leaders of tomorrow.

Let us also take time to celebrate our fellowship. The relationships we build within Rotary are just as important as the projects we complete. Together, we are not only serving our community—we are building friendships that enrich our lives.

Thank you for your tireless dedication, generosity, and passion for service to our club’s mission. Let’s make this April a month of significant action and renewed fellowship. I am proud to serve alongside each of you.

Yours in Rotary Service,
Jim Schlenvogt
President

A Message from the President Elect

My focus next year will be to identify opportunities to collaborate with other clubs, particularly for a joint international project. I will also work to bring us together socially where we get to know each other better and look to provide incentives for all members to participate in club programs and projects in 2026-2027.

I believe we can build on the successes of the past year and continue to improve our public image and impact in the community. Our club has and will continue to make a difference.

March  Happenings

We had a wonderful time on March 10 with moving our meeting to help the Sun City Rotary Club with its fundraiser, Festa Italiana. Over 14 S & SCW Rotarians, Sojourners and Guests/Spouses/Significant others helped celebrate Sun City RC and their causes (OBTW they support us as well in our Meals of Hope and DPIL efforts). A great time was had by all as we were entertained with music and musical theater.

On March 24 with had our quarterly Women4Women packing event at the Colonnade before the meeting. We packed women's hygiene products and had assistance from residents of the Colonnade.

The meeting itself featured our County District Supervisor Debbie Lesko.

She let us know the inner workings of the Maricopa County Government, her priorities as well as discussed the current election issues that are within the county. It was informative and enlightening.

We also has a brief message from Gabe Fasolino, a Rotarian visiting us from La Mision Rotary Club in Baja California.

The meeting was great fun and followed by the Taste of Surprise planning meeting.

News you can use:

Our monthly volunteering at the Valley View Community Food bank in Peoria is cancelled until at least September when our Seasonal Members return from their summer hiatus.

Meals of Hope for 2026 has been scheduled for September 19 at the Ottawa University Faith Arena.
More information coming.

Remember the District Conference is in Mesa on May 1 and 2nd.Event Cover Image

On June 14, we have the opportunity to raise more money for DPIL. The Arizona Rattlers are going to allow us to sell tickets to their 4:30 game to increase our ability to serve more children through our DPIL efforts.
